Synopsis

One night, Myrtle Downing, who is engaged to young lawyer Stephen Cameron, dreams that she has married Gyp Lassiter, a criminal and Cameron's chief enemy. The next morning, Myrtle reads the newspaper announcement of her marriage to Lassiter and realizes that the night before was no dream, but that Lassiter drugged, then married her while she was in a hypnotic condition. Lassiter then takes Myrtle to a lonely house where he locks her in a dungeon. Lassiter then tells her about his many wives, all of whom he killed when they tried to escape, and Myrtle realizes that if she tries to expose him she will face the same fate as the others. Soon the discouraged Cameron goes to Alaska and becomes rich on a claim. When claim jumpers try to swindle him out of his property, he is saved by prizefighter Chick Barton, who informs him that redistribution of the Congressional districts in his hometown, Cartersville, has permitted blacks to run for Congress. When he learns that Lassiter himself is being groomed for office, Cameron returns to Cartersville to run against Lassiter and hopefully prevent his election. Meanwhile, Myrtle learns that her husband has agreed to permit racial segregation and thus force blacks to leave the city's best neighborhoods, in return for money and a seat in Congress. Myrtle tries more than once to escape to warn the community of the danger presented by Lassiter's election, and when she finally succeeds, she has him exposed in a Black newspaper. An enraged Lassiter finds Myrtle, carries her to his dungeon, where he plans to torture and kill her, but Cameron manages to rescue Myrtle and in the ensuing struggle kills his evil rival.
