A Modern Cain

1921

Brief Synopsis

William and Paul Moore are African-American twin brothers. Orphaned at an early age, they are raised by their uncle. When they grow up, William invests his inheritance in a business, but Paul squanders his share. Worse, they both fall in love with the same girl. Paul is so greedy and jealous (like Cain of the Bible) that he pushes John off a cliff and reports him missing and presumed dead. John survives the fall, however, though he suffers temporary brain damage and develops amnesia. Fortunately, a doctor cures him, and John finds his way back home. There, he learns that Paul has died from dope addiction. At last he is free to marry the girl he loves without further complication.

Synopsis

John and Paul, African-American twin brothers, are orphaned at an early age and left in the care of an uncle. Grown to manhood, John invests his inheritance in a business, while Paul squanders his share. They fall in love with the same girl. Avaricious and inflamed with jealousy, Paul pushes John off a cliff and reports him as missing. John, who is not killed, becomes a half-wit and wanders around in an amnesic fog until he is cured by a doctor. John returns home and finds that Paul has died from dope addiction. He marries his sweetheart, and thus all ends well.
