Synopsis

Samuel, the last of Israel's judges, seeks out the shepherd boy David and proclaims that he is to become great in Israel. Saul, the king of Israel, is challenged by the Philistines to send a warrior to meet their champion, Goliath; David slays Goliath, inspiring the Israelites to victory over the Philistines and winning the admiration of Saul's son Jonathan, with whom he forms a lifelong friendship. Summoned to court to expel the evil spirits that have made Saul ill, David becomes a favorite of the court, exacerbating Saul's jealousy. Saul's attempts to kill David, who has married Saul's daughter Michal, fail, and he eventually drives David into a ten-year exile in the land of the Philistines. When Jonathan is slain in a battle with the Philistines, Saul kills himself in grief, and David is summoned by the Israelites to become their king.

Notes

Crest produced this film in Monrovia, CA during the first half of 1917 and contemporary trade articles announced the film's completion in July 1917, but no evidence that the film was released that year has been located. It is possible that an attempt to release the film was made in late 1918, but this also is unclear. In 1920, United Projector and Film Co. distributed the film to educational institutions.
