Synopsis

The town of Smithfield contained too few patients for the successful practice of two doctors, and as a result, old Dr. Kirk lost his practice to his younger and more energetic competitor, Dr. Brundage. While examining Mary Lawson's invalid mother one day, Dr. Brundage makes advances towards Mary who, in a fit of rage, threatens his life. When her mother takes a sudden turn for the worse, Mary hurries to the doctor, only to find that he has been murdered. Discovered in the room of the dead man, Mary is brought to trial and convicted of murder. Old Joe, the village cobbler, helps her escape to another state where she meets John Harlow and the two are married. Old Dr. Kirk, who has become a derelict, enters Mary's life once more and begins to blackmail her. The police learn of Mary's whereabouts, and Dr. Kirk, thinking that they are after him, breaks down and confesses to the murder.
