Synopsis

Ruth, a young orphan, lives with her brutal foster father, Jim Vance, an alcoholic mountaineer in the Canadian woods. When Vance, in a stupor, assaults her one night, Ruth stabs him and, thinking that he is dead, wanders into the woods. Trapper Jules Le Clerc hears Ruth's cry, and after he cares for her, they marry at the Du Bois Settlement where Jules becomes partners with Mackenzie, the general store owner. Six years later, Ruth, who now has a child, finds Vance robbing the cash drawer. She remains silent when he threatens to reveal the earlier rape. After Mackenzie blames Jules for the theft, Ruth says that she saw an unidentified man leave. In a saloon, when Jules overhears Vance brag about seeing his "old girl" the night before, Jules suspects that he is Ruth's lover. Jules chases Vance through the woods, but loses his trail. After a fire is started when Vance lights a cigarette, Jules finds him, and their fight ends with Vance's death by drowning. Ruth explains her past to Jules and they are reconciled.
