Synopsis

When the United States declares war on Germany, Frank Allen, who is happily engaged to Phyllis Montgomery, a colonel's daughter, refuses to enlist, calling himself a pacifist. While his family grieves over his decision, Von Litz, a lieutenant in the Prussian army posing as an American patriot, applauds it and encourages him to resist. Disgusted by Frank's cowardice, Phyllis breaks with him and throws her engagement ring at his feet. Although he is given tours of drilling soldiers and other military operations, Frank persists in his pacifism, still influenced by Von Litz, who now works secretly with the Mexicans against the United States. When a submarine carrying his father and sister is torpedoed by the Germans, however, Frank rethinks his decision and becomes an avid war supporter. Unmasked by the Secret Service as a spy, Von Litz is dragged through the streets by Frank, who then forces him to kiss the American flag. His bravery reaffirmed, Frank reunites with Phyllis.
