Synopsis

Millionaire banker Roger Brand insists that his cashier, Spencer Rutherford, who loves Brand's daughter Alethea, acquire a fortune equal to hers before marrying her. Then Baron Norvinsk, allegedly a representative of the Russian government, arrives with Paula Lavergne, supposedly his sister, to open an account. Brand, who has been reading about fortunes made overnight in munitions speculation, welcomes Norvinsk and gives him a half-million dollars in credit after conducting only a superficial investigation of Norvinsk. After Alethea's French maid reveals that Norvinsk and Lavergne are impostors, Alethea, on the pretext of eloping with Norvinsk, lures him to the bank's safe deposit vault. A detective closes the door to trap Norvinsk, and Alethea is nearly raped, but Spencer arrives with Brand and burns through the door to rescue her. Spencer then claims that by restoring the half-million, he has earned the amount needed to marry Alethea, and Brand agrees. When a Russian agent arrests Norvinsk, he pleads with Lavergne to save him from Siberia, so she kills him.
