Synopsis

During the 1880's, young Billy lives on a military outpost with his father, Captain Andrews, and his stepmother Mary. Indians go on the warpath, and Captain Andrews and his men go after them, but the Indians fool the cavalry and attack the outpost in force while the soldiers pursue only a small band. Billy and Mary hide in the hills, and the young boy turns into a hero when, by sounding the bugle call, he makes the Indians retreat because they believe that the soldiers are returning. Besides saving the outpost, Billy's actions establish a strong rapport with Mary, with whom he had had an uneasy relationship since her marriage to his widowed father.
