Synopsis

When Arthur Rayburn graduates from a theological seminary, some of the underclassmen spike the punch at his ordination. He becomes thoroughly intoxicated and is defrocked by the Bishop for his scandalous behavior, and his fiancée, Rene, breaks their engagement. Sinking into slum life, he falls under the spell of Rags, a piano player in a saloon. After she prevents him from committing suicide, he recovers and opens a mission for other unfortunates, doing such good work that the Bishop recognizes his benevolent enterprise and reinstates him as a minister. Arthur asks Rags to marry him, but she refuses, realizing that he really loves Rene.

Notes

Most contemporary reviews give Hawks sole credit for the story, but one of the film's copyrights refers to Ince as co-author of the story. Contemporary sources disagree on whether the last name of the actress playing Rene is spelled Holloway or Halloway.
