Synopsis

While Hazel Kirke, a miller's daughter, is away at school, she falls in love with and quietly marries, Arthur Carringford, a young millionaire. Arthur's mother, however, who disapproves of Hazel's lower class background, tells her that the marriage is not a legal one, because a servant, always aware of the family's best interests, hired a fake minister to perform the ceremony. Despondent, Hazel returns to her parents' home and then tries to drown herself. Arthur, however, having come after Hazel, rescues her and tells her that the servant made a mistake. The minister was indeed a real one, so Arthur and Hazel have always been and will continue to be, husband and wife.
