Synopsis

During World War I, on the French border, stands a chateau where Hugo de Grandpre and his sisters, Yvonne and Babiole, live. When the Germans take over the chateau, Lieutenant Eric von Rodek, "the Babe," plays havoc there until Yvonne throws a glass of wine in his face. He decides to take his revenge by attacking her in the wine cellar of the innkeeper Bobeche but he has a change of heart and spares her when she faints. Later, Bobeche attacks her, but Eric returns in time to prevent a rape and kills Bobeche in the struggle. When the murder is discovered, Eric admits that he is guilty but does not implicate Yvonne, fearing that she will be compromised. Yvonne, however, thinks that Eric raped her and that Bobeche was merely trying to defend her. She stabs Eric, then has a change of heart and nurses him back to health. She falls in love with him, but Hugo puts her in front of a court-martial and she is condemned to death. Eric, who had been away on a dangerous mission as punishment for his crime, arrives in time to save her and they decide to wait together until peace is declared.
