Synopsis

In England, Pamela Congrieve naïvely falls in love with Lord Charteris, who convinces her father to help him in a smuggling operation. When the plan fails, Charteris saves himself by handing over the old man to the authorities for execution, after which Pamela vows revenge. Several months later, she stabs Charteris, and, thinking that he is dead, joins a troupe of actors to avoid the police. She soon becomes a court favorite and the Duke of Harlow asks her to marry him, but Pamela refuses because she is afraid that news of the murder might surface and ruin Harlow's reputation. Then, however, Charteris, having recovered from the knife wound, reappears with plans to steal Harlow's fortune. To keep Pamela from exposing him, Charteris kidnaps her, but Harlow tracks them down and kills Charteris, after which, no longer ashamed of her past, Pamela quickly agrees to marry her rescuer.
