Synopsis

Stuck in a boring marriage with her only job that of raising a daughter, Janet Osborne dreams of a stage career. Then, she meets Geoffrey Allen, a theatrical agent, and when she tries to find acting work through him, her husband Mark throws her out of the house. Janet's career fails, and instead of becoming Geoffrey's client, she becomes his mistress, although he soon deserts her. Janet then learns that her daughter Marcia has become an actress, and, without revealing her identity, she gets a job as her maid. She discovers that Marcia, too, has become involved with Geoffrey, and has rejected another suitor, the sincere but mundane Ellis Raymond. To prevent her daughter from repeating her own mistake, Janet kills Geoffrey, after which Marcia marries Ellis. A short time later Janet dies without Marcia ever learning that she was her mother.
