Notes
The film, which was made under the titles The Birth of Indiana and Historic Indiana, was primarily intended for distribution within Indiana. Its first showing was on June 7, 1916 to a selected audience which included the Governor of Indiana, the Indiana State Historical Commission, and other state officials. Pre-release trade articles state that the film was planned as a seven-reeler and that the filmmakers planned to enlist the services of opera singer Marguerita Beriza as the female lead, of James Whitcomb Riley to write the titles in verse, and of Meredith Nicholson, Booth Tarkington, George Ade, John T. McCutcheon and other Indiana literary figures to act as consultants. Filming took place in Selig's Chicago studios and at a simulated frontier settlement and stockade built by the production at Lafayette, IN. Gilson Willets May have written the scenario as well as the film's story.
