Synopsis

Casey is equally devoted to his niece and to the Mudville baseball team for which he stars. On the day of the big game, however, Casey's niece seriously injures herself and he refuses to leave her. Hearing the crowd calling for him, Casey decides he must play and, leaving a friend with the girl, he arrives at the ballpark in the ninth inning when it looks as if the team's chances of winning are slight: Mudville has two men on base but trails by two runs with two outs. Casey lets two strikes go by and then sees his friend in the ballpark. Thinking he has come with bad news about his niece, a rattled Casey strikes out. After the game Casey learns that the girl has gotten better, but that all of Mudville has turned on him, and so he leaves town forever.

Notes

De Wolf Hopper was famous for his recitations of the poem "Casey at the Bat." In 1927, Famous Players-Lasky released a Paramount film based on the same source, directed by Monte Brice and starring Wallace Beery. (See AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1921-30; F2.0795.)
