Synopsis

Discarded by her attorney husband, Jacqueline Floriot begins twenty years of wandering in South America and France, during which time she becomes an alcoholic and drug addict. Then, back in Paris, she falls in with a gang that plans to blackmail her husband, using as leverage the threat of exposing how he treated his wife. Fearing that this will result in her grown-up son Raymond, whom she left with her husband, learning all about his mother's sordid past, Jacqueline murders Laroque, the gang leader. She is then arrested, and, hoping to maintain her anonymity, she identifies herself only as Madame X at her trial, during which Raymond serves as her court-appointed lawyer. Without knowing the woman's true identity, Raymond manages to win her acquittal, after which Jacqueline's husband recognizes her, and Raymond discovers his true relation to her. Then, overcome by emotion, Jacqueline dies in her husband's arms.
