Synopsis

In Virginia, before the Civil War, Mark Embury despairs of ever finding the ideal wife. As a result, he decides to raise one, and so, taking Peggy from an orphanage, he starts teaching her to meet his specifications. The plan seems to be working until Peggy begins a love affair with Mark's nephew, Captain George Lovell, a hero of the Mexican War. When Peggy believes the rumors of George's ongoing romance with Mrs. Goodlake, however, she is heartbroken and tells Mark that she will marry him even though she loves his nephew. To guarantee his own happiness, Mark is tempted to let Peggy go on believing in George's duplicity, but he finally relents and tells her that the stories of the Goodlake flirtation are false. As a result, Peggy marries George, while Mark must content himself with having raised the perfect wife for someone other than himself.
