Synopsis

When her sister Lillian and childhood sweetheart Eugene are adopted by wealthy parents, Beulah Benton leaves the Louisiana orphanage where she was reared and struggles to earn her own living as a servant. Upon learning that her sister is seriously ill, Beulah visits Lillian and meets her physician, Dr. Guy Hartwell, an embittered man who years earlier had been betrayed by his wife. The widowed doctor adopts Beulah following Lillian's death, but Beulah's suffering continues as Guy's widowed sister and her daughter, fearing that the girl might inherit the physician's estate, constantly humiliate her. After Beulah's return from school, Guy professes his love for her. Beulah, however, still pines for Eugene, who arrives home from Europe engaged to a frivolous girl. Guy tries to reform the youth, but his efforts prove unsuccessful. Frustrated, Guy goes North, while Beulah becomes a teacher. Upon reading of an epidemic in his town some time later, Guy returns and finds Beulah nursing the ill. Together they save many lives, and Beulah finally realizes that she loves him.
