Synopsis

During the Spanish-American War, cowardly Lieutenant Richard Bellamy absconds with his regiment's funds, returns to America, and seduces the wife of fellow officer Frank Dalton. Dalton returns to discover his wife's infidelity and, broken by the news, becomes a drifter, taking odd jobs and sleeping in gutters. After Bellamy deserts Mrs. Dalton, who dies, he takes Dalton's daughter Fanny and teams up with Norris, a gambler. The two men blackmail George Medhurst for forging his father's name on a check. Medhurst falls in love with Fanny, and marries her after his father dies and leaves an inheritance. However, Medhurst deserts Fanny upon discovering that the will stipulates that he marry his father's choice, Rose Edgerton. After Dalton, now known as Old Tom, saves Medhurst from an approaching subway train, and Fanny from drowning, Bellamy and Norris, responsible for the murder attempts, are traced through the forged check and arrested. Rose gives Medhurst his inheritance, advising him to return to Fanny, and Old Tom comes to live with his daughter and new son-in-law.
