Synopsis

Cecil Weatherby, an American adventurer in the Orient, enters the ancient city of Er Heb, where no white man has been, despite the warnings of his traveling companion, John Robbins. In a temple garden, Cecil looks through a barred window and sees the beautiful priestess Ameera, who is forbidden to speak to men under penalty of the "Living Death." Dhur, a priest who loves Ameera, informs the high priest Zymba, who orders Cecil to leave. That night, Cecil returns and talks with Ameera. After he is captured by guards, he and Ameera are ordered to die by starvation in the "City of the Dead," a pocket in a cliff surrounded by rock. Tied together, Cecil and Ameera are lowered into the pit. After Ameera frees Cecil with her knife, he carves steps into the soft rock. They crawl days and nights to the top, where Cecil fights Dhur, who then pursues them across a rope bridge. When Cecil collapses unconscious, Ameera cuts the rope, sending Dhur to his death. Finally Cecil and Ameera are found by Robbins, who takes them to civilization, where they marry.
