Synopsis

Because of her time-consuming charitable endeavors, Mrs. Hoffman hires Bettina, a flirtatious young woman, as her secretary and governess for her children. Anxious to rise in the world, Bettina seduces Frederick Hoffman, her employer's husband, and urges him to run away to the city with her. Tired of his quiet marriage, Frederick seizes the opportunity and leaves for the city but becomes the victim of Bettina's greedy, demanding ways, which quickly deplete his savings. When Allison, an old friend, gives him proof of Bettina's affair with another, younger man, Frederick, now sick and penniless, forcefully rejects her, returns to his wife and, begging forgiveness, reunites with his family.
