Synopsis

Pierson, a Greek professor, disapproves of his daughter Maria's boyfriend, Jack de Lacy, the captain of the crew team. When, after his team wins a contest, he receives word that he has lost his fortune, Jack goes to think beside a river, where he sees a young man fall from a yacht. Jack saves the man, who is wealthy New York playboy George Kelsey, but disappears before George sees his benefactor. In New York, George unwittingly becomes a rival for Maria's affections. After Maria and Jack quarrel, he starts a flirtation with Mrs. Marvin, Maria's widowed friend. One evening, they all converge on the home of Livingston, Mrs. Marvin's fiancé, before attending a masked ball. After several instances of mistaken identity and misinterpretation of events, George discovers that Jack saved his life and promises to provide for Jack and Maria's future. The professor then gives the couple his blessing and looks fondly on spinster Lavinia Backsetter.
