Synopsis
When Stephen Winthrop, a wealthy New York banker, learns that his daughter Alice loves her music teacher, Carl Winters, he has Carl dismissed and plans a long trip with Alice. After Alice and Carl marry, Winthrop orders her out. While Carl goes to Rio de Janeiro to become a college musical director, Alice, planning to follow later, dies in childbirth. Winthrop's telegram relating Alice's death depresses Carl so much that he loses his job and is reduced to making a meager living singing in cabarets. Many years later, Carl, now a street musician, goes to New York to visit Alice's grave. His daughter, also named Alice, is attracted by his music and invites him to play at her birthday party. When Carl notices his wife's photograph and realizes he is the girl's father, he tells Winthrop. After refusing Winthrop's money to keep silent, Carl leaves to preserve his daughter's happiness, but Winthrop, now remorseful, asks his forgiveness and introduces Alice to her father.
