Synopsis
Bulgarian Major Alexis Spiridoff loves his Colonel's daughter, Nadina Popoff, who promises fidelity when he leaves to fight Servia. After Servia's defeat, Lieutenant Bumerli, a Swiss adventurer in the Servian army, escapes capture by climbing the Popoff's balcony and entering Nadina's room. After Bumerli relates that he has eaten only chocolate drops for three days, Nadina, her mother Aurelia, and cousin Mascha, all fascinated, connive to hide him for the night. The next day, the women give Bumerli Popoff's coat for his escape, and each secretly puts their photograph in a pocket. Although Bulgarian officer Massakroff chases Bumerli, he escapes and pawns the coat. Later at the peace conference, Bumerli meets Popoff, who invites him to his home. When Popoff complains about his missing coat, Bumerli retrieves it and finds the photos. After Massakroff identifies Bumerli, Alexis sees Nadina's photograph with the inscription: "From Nadina to her Chocolate Soldier." He breaks the engagement and duels with Bumerli. After Bumerli disarms him, Alexis proposes to Mascha. While leaving, Bumerli unexpectedly meets Nadina at her balcony, and they discover that they love each other.

The operetta was taken from the play Arms and the Man by George Bernard Shaw, which opened in London on April 21, 1894. The operetta opened in New York under the title The Chocolate Soldier on September 13, 1909, with an adapted text by Stanislaus Stange, who was the director. F. C. Whitney was the Broadway producer. There was a pre-release private showing of the film in November 1914 in New York. According to reviews, all the principals in the stage production were in the film. A specially arranged score was prepared using the music from the stage production.
