Synopsis

Eastman, a promising young artist, marries Alice, the daughter of a ruined banker who killed himself. Eastman then goes blind from overwork, struggling to support Alice in the manner to which she had been accustomed. With their son Arthur, they go to live with Eastman's sister-in-law Hester, who makes Alice's life miserable. She runs away to become a wealthy woman's traveling companion and sends her earnings to Eastman. Hester intercepts the letters and leads Eastman to believe that Alice eloped with her former suitor, wealthy banker Talbot Vane. Eventually, Hester drives out Eastman and Arthur. After the cheap hotel in which they stay burns down, Alice reads of their deaths and marries Vane. Years later, Arthur, now a famous artist, takes his father to a London eye specialist. When Arthur falls in love with Vane's niece Lillian, Alice is shocked to discover that he is alive. Eastman, now cured, denounces Alice, but after Vane dies in a steeplechase accident, and Hester's deathbed confession arrives, Eastman and Alice embrace.
