Synopsis
While recuperating from a hunting accident, ne'er-do-well gambler Tom Ward falls in love with Grace Bell, the sister of his college friend Bob. During a masked boxing match at the college, Tom accidentally strikes what he thinks is a fatal blow to his opponent, who turns out to be Bob. Because of this and because he is falsely accused of robbing the dean, Tom seeks shelter with Nellie, a fisher girl. Later, when Grace is bitten by a snake, Nellie comes to her aid. Meanwhile, Bob recovers and, searching for Tom, meets Nellie and falls in love with her, unaware that she has saved Grace. When Bob takes Nellie home to meet his family, Grace is delighted to see her benefactress, and the Bells welcome her. The family is then visited by a mysterious nocturnal figure known as the Shadow, whom they soon discover is Tom. Learning that he is exonerated, Tom resumes his romance with Grace.
