Synopsis

Millionaire banker Hartman is unaware that his wife is the indulgent mother of ne'er-do-well Philip Sleek, a man who is conspiring with "Hook and Hand," a handicapped criminal, to rob him. Through Sleek's machinations, William, Hartman's personal secretary and the fiancé of his adopted daughter Margaret, is blamed for the theft. Later, Mrs. Hartman persuades her husband to take Sleek, whom she says is a distant relative, into his firm as a partner. Meanwhile, Margaret hires Fox, a wiley detective, to exonerate William whose innocence is confirmed by Hook and Hand's deathbed confession. Unaware that his innocence has been proven, William escapes his guards on the way to the state penitentiary, jumping into the river from a train. In the end, Margaret, who has been abducted by Sleek, is rescued by Fox, William is freed, and Sleek and his gang are arrested while their hideout is set on fire.
