Synopsis

Although Catherine Spencer loves banker Wilbur Emerson, she marries James Darwin, an attorney, who becomes insanely jealous when he learns of his wife's affection for the other man. Wilbur, intent on amassing a fortune, speculates with bank funds, but an investigation of the bank conducted by James, as well as false evidence planted by cowardly stockholder George Cowper, lead to his incrimination. Wilbur obtains a confession from Cowper, but when he attempts to regain the true evidence from James's study, where Cowper had hidden it, he finds Catherine. James interrupts them and thinks that they have been having a rendezvous. In the end, Wilbur agrees to accept responsibility for the bank's financial losses, and Catherine, assuring him of her love, promises to divorce James and wait for Wilbur while he is imprisoned.

Notes

In addition to Vitagraph's 1919 version (see below), Klein's play was remade in 1929 by Warner Bros., directed by Michael Curtiz and starring H. B. Warner and Lois Wilson (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1921-30; F2.2009).
