Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Betty, reared in an orphanage, tires of the abuse which she receives there and escapes. She then is taken in by Francis Seeman, a gentleman thief, who adopts and educates her. After Betty's graduation, Seeman wants her to begin a life of crime by stealing her friend Gladys' necklace. When Betty refuses, Seeman tries to strangle her, but in self-defense she stabs him with a hatpin, then flees, thinking him dead. He recovers, however, and names Betty as his accomplice. Meanwhile, Betty has moved to a small town where the local citizens regard her with suspicion. Their distrust is increased after Roger Neville, a young lawyer, befriends her and she adopts a motherless child. When her picture appears in the paper identified as that of a notorious jewel thief, she is persuaded by Neville to stand trial. In the end, she is acquitted, but Seeman is sentenced to a long prison term.
