Synopsis

During the Reign of Terror, Charlotte Corday and her lover Barbaroux live an idyllic existence at her palatial estate in Normandy. Marat, who secretly desires Charlotte, befriends Barbaroux and lures him to Paris where he openly proclaims his disgust at the excesses of the revolution. Danton, a confederate of Marat's, overhears Barbaroux's words and betrays him. While attempting to escape in a garbage truck, Barbaroux is apprehended. Charlotte, who has come to Paris following a divine command which she received while reading the Bible, witnesses her lover's arrest. Later, Marat, mad with lust, summons Charlotte and offers to spare Barbaroux if she will accept him as a lover. She consents, and Marat destroys the order for Barbaroux's execution. Then, while kissing Marat, Charlotte stabs him to death. With Barbaroux free, however, she fearlessly faces the guillotine.
