Synopsis
Because he has lost everything as a result of unwise stock speculations, Wall Street executive Henry Barrett takes his own life by jumping out of a hotel window. His wife Jane is forced to sell her possessions and starts all over again with the aid of her son Thomas, who obtains a job in the coal mine of John Pearce, his sweetheart Helen's father. Tom advances himself through the ranks until he is fired, due to the machinations of Phil Blair, Helen's former boyfriend, and George Bowers, his late father's business partner. Tom is then put in charge of a new mine and is a success. Both Tom and the village in which the mine is located prosper until a terrible fire breaks out, destroying the mine and much of the village. Encouraged by Phil Blair, the townspeople blame Tom for the accident until it is determined that the fire was caused by an explosion of oil. Ultimately, all of the miners benefit from the discovery of oil and Tom succeeds in restoring his family's wealth.

Notes
The film's subtitle was The Sunken Village. According to press releases, an entire street in a Pennsylvania mining town was built and then destroyed before the cameras to heighten the dramatic effect of the fire sequence.
