Synopsis

Mary Denbigh leaves her Pennsylvania working-class family with Max Crossman, who promises to marry her, but soon discovers that Crossman is a procurer for a house of ill-repute. Forced to work as a prostitute in Rose Legere's New York City brothel, Mary soon escapes but discovers that all other forms of work are now unavailable to her. She returns home, but her father drives her out, after which Mary again goes to the brothel. Seeing Mary's physical deterioration, Rose now refuses to admit her. Eventually, Mary collapses on the street, where she is found by a kindly man.
