Synopsis

In 1831, Ralph Hartsook goes to rural Flat Creek, Indiana hoping to establish a school, but meets with opposition by the hostile townspeople and their children who have driven off every aspiring schoolmaster thus far. His leading opponents are politician Pete Jones and Bud Means, a local bully. Ralph falls in love with Hannah Thompson, an educated young woman indentured to the Means family. Unaware that Ralph loves Hannah, Mrs. Means tries to interest him in her daughter Sis. When Jones accuses the schoolmaster of a crime, Bud comes to Ralph's defense, and the guilty party is proven to be Jones himself. Hannah is reunited with her brother Shocky and freed from bondage.
