Synopsis

A man runs for the state assembly on the reform ticket and is helped in his campaign by the Rev. Richard Walters and his son Horace. The candidate wants his daughter to marry Horace, even though she is in love with another young man. The candidate's wife tries to help the daughter and sweetheart to elope, but when her husband finds her in a compromising situation, he throws her out, forcing her to leave their other daughter, a baby named Mary, with him. Many years later, Mary has grown into a young woman, while the mother, who now calls herself Helen Smith, has become a member of a white slavery gang. Her former husband is now the governor. When Mary is kidnapped and taken to the house of prostitution where Helen resides, her mother, recognizing the girl, shoots a man who is trying to harm her. At the subsequent trial, Helen is convicted of murder while her former husband, fearing public humiliation, does nothing to help her. After her conviction the governor has a change of heart, but Helen dies before he can help her.
