Synopsis

Rurick, an old political prisoner, is saved from death in Siberia by his wife and daughter Viska, who tell authorities that the old man has drowned himself and then transport him to Moscow in a trunk. The women are saved from harassing cossacks by Ivan, the son of General Romanoff [or Orlof], who has been discharged from the army for refusing to participate in a massacre. After Rurick dies, Viska and Ivan join a revolutionary band, then Ivan is selected by lot to slay Romanoff. Viska, ignorant of Ivan's true identity, prepares to kill Romanoff with a bomb, but, at the last moment, Ivan saves his father. Ivan and Viska are then thrown into prison, but revolutionaries storm the fortress and Romanoff is mortally wounded. Now realizing the equality of all men, he clasps the hand of a dying revolutionary. After they are freed by comrades, Viska and Ivan discover the former adversaries' embracing bodies and are elevated by such a gesture of friendship.
