Synopsis

George Fordyce changes his name to George Gormly because of a past crime and then becomes a respected businessman and the reform candidate for mayor. Gormly loves Eleanor, the daughter of William Haldane, president of Gotham Traction, a powerful company which controls the city government and has its own candidate for mayor. When a woman from Gormly's past unsuccessfully tries to blackmail him romantically, she goes to the chief of police with information about Gormly's past. The chief then tells Haldane, who suggests to his daughter that she test Gormly's love by offering to marry him if he withdraws his candidacy for mayor. He refuses, but eventually everything is straightened out: Gormly becomes mayor and wins Eleanor.
