Synopsis

Shipbuilder John R. Bradley, impressed by titles, encourages the fortune-hunting Baron de Coverly's courtship of his daughter Miriam. During a cruise on Bradley's schooner Carpathia , Miriam meets artist Gilbert Hastings, and they begin a romance. Infuriated, the drunken de Coverly sets fire to the ship. He, Miriam, and Hastings are the only survivors and are washed ashore on an island inhabited only by an aged hermit. The baron attempts to kill Hastings by cutting the rope that Hastings is using to cross a chasm, but the artist survives the fall. Later, coveting the hermit's treasure, de Coverly hurls the old man from a precipice. As Miriam and Hastings board a rescue ship, the baron is prevented from joining them by the hermit's ghost, which bars his way. Finally, the ranting de Coverly remains on the island with only the old man's ghost as his companion.
