Synopsis

After California farmer Billy Balderson successfully defends his neighbors' lands against the encroachment of the railroads, he is elected to the state legislature. Billy easily adapts to his life in the capital, but Addie, his wife, retains her rustic ways. The Baldersons are befriended by George Marshall, a lobbyist for the railroads, and by his wife Myrtle, who flirts outrageously with Billy. When Addie hears herself described as a drudge by two gossips, she decides to change her appearance drastically and attends a ball to which only Billy has been invited in a gown designed by Madame Pauline. Marshall, stunned by her beauty, attempts to persuade her to use her womanly wiles on Billy to further the interests of the railroad. Recognizing the woman engaging Marshall's attention as his own wife, Billy ends their conversation. Delighted by Billy's jealousy, Addie then teaches him to tango.
