Synopsis

Dunston Leech, a gambler, wants to marry his mother's ward, Kate Heathcote, but she prefers Richard Blunt, who tutors Dunston's crippled half brother Cecil. Dunston poisons some grapes meant for Cecil, killing him. Richard then convinces Kate to marry him immediately and go with him to South Africa, accompanied by three ex-acrobats. Dunston follows, and with a small band of Arabs, abducts Kate and her child. They are rescued by Richard and the acrobats who form a human chain over a chasm on which Kate and the child escape. Kate believes that Richard has died during their flight so she returns to England where she is given a silver box by Mrs. Jeff, Cecil's mother. Dunston tries to steal the box because it contains the hypodermic needle he used to poison Cecil, but he is caught and takes a lethal dose of morphine to avoid punishment for the crime.
