Synopsis

Cyril Maitland, who is studying for the ministry, impregnates a girl of his parish, Alma Lee, then falls silent when his best friend Everard is accused of killing her father, a crime inadvertently committed by Cyril. Sentenced to twenty years in prison, Henry serves his time, with only Lillian, his fiancée, believing in his innocence. Upon his release, Henry visits Cyril, now a renowned minister, and confronts him with his deed. Alma Lee sends Benjamin, the son, to meet Cyril with a note requesting that Cyril pay for the young man's education, but when Benjamin discovers his father's treachery, he denounces him, causing Alma Lee's death. After his wife dies from grief, the weight upon Cyril's conscience grows even heavier. Henry writes him a moving letter of forgiveness, and on the following Sunday, Cyril delivers a sermon in which he confesses his litany of sins, then drops dead at the pulpit.
