Synopsis

Organist John Jasper of Cloisterham Cathedral, an opium smoker, secretly desires Rosa Bud, his nephew Edwin Drood's fiancée. Although Jasper instigates a quarrel between Drood and Neville Landless, his rival for Rosa's hand, the two are reconciled. With Jasper's plans foiled, he attacks his nephew in the forest and throws the unconscious youth into a pond. Unknown to his uncle, however, Drood is rescued by fishermen. Meanwhile, Landless is arrested and charged with Drood's murder based on suspicions aroused by Jasper. Soon after, however, Jasper is hounded by the black-robed mistress of the opium den he frequents and also by a mysterious stranger named Mr. Datchery. Finally, Datchery is revealed to be Landless' sister Helena who brings Drood forward and thereby exonerates her brother.
