Synopsis

Financier John Burkett Ryder initiates an impeachment campaign against Supreme Court Justice Rossmore when Rossmore refuses to be influenced in Ryder's favor. The judge's daughter Shirley and Ryder's son Jefferson meet during an ocean voyage and fall in love, and then, under the pseudonym Sarah Green, Shirley writes an exposé of the money trust, based on Jefferson's description of his father. Meanwhile, Ryder, ignoring Jefferson's wishes, announces his son's engagement to Kate Roberts, the daughter of a United States Senator, and hires "Sarah Green" to write his biography. Shirley uses her position with Ryder to gain evidence to vindicate her father. A short time later, after Kate has eloped with Ryder's private secretary, the financier suggests that his son marry Sarah Green. Shirley reveals her true identity and rejects Jefferson as an unworthy suitor because of his father's character, but Ryder relents, ceasing his attack on the judge, and begs Shirley to accept his son as a husband.

Notes

Some exteriors of the United States Capitol building were seen in the film. Sources give conflicting information for direction and scenario credits. Klein's play was filmed again in 1919 by Vitagraph (see below) and in 1928 by Warner Bros., with Lionel Barrymore starring and Lloyd Bacon directing (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1921-30; F2.3100).
