Synopsis

Mr. Fanshaw raises his daughter Jean as a boy, much to the consternation of his prim wife and proper daughter Amelia. When he dies, Amelia persecutes her sister, and during an altercation she cuts herself on a sickle held by Jean. Amelia then tells her mother that Jean attacked her with the implement and Jean is sent to a reformatory. Jean escapes, but when she encounters artist Craig Atwood in a forest, he counsels her to return. During a riot led by Stella, a prostitute, Jean saves the matron's life and is thus granted a pardon. Amelia, recently married to a scoundrel named Harry, and Mrs. Fanshaw refuse to take Jean in. She is hounded by Stella to the point that she is on the brink of suicide when she again meets Craig. The two fall in love and, despite further adversity, Jean saves Amelia's marriage and weds Craig.
