Synopsis

On a riverboat, gambler John Diamond befriends Willard Graham, who has become the prey of cardsharps. John wins back Graham's money, but incurs his enmity over the love of fellow passenger Annie Dennison. John and Annie marry and move to Jacksonville and then Graham sends Annie an anonymous note describing John's past. Confronted with the truth, John decides to get an honest job to support Annie and their daughter Leonie, but Graham causes John to be fired and he must become a night watchman. One night, Graham visits Annie, claiming that John is out gambling and when John returns home, he thinks that she has been unfaithful. John goes to Texas and becomes a cattle baron. Ten years later, he saves a young woman from being raped by Pedro Sanchez, unaware of the fact that she is Leonie. Meanwhile, Graham discovers, through Sanchez, that Annie has become a schoolteacher in the same town. Various obstacles finally are overcome, and the Diamonds are reconciled after Graham confesses on his deathbed to his wrong-doings.
