Synopsis

The wealthy but weary Jack Henderson journeys to the Adirondacks on a hunting trip, where he accidentally shoots Mercy Baxter, a mountain girl, in the arm. Jack falls in love with the untutored Mercy, and despite his father's objections, he finally marries her. Mercy's strenuous efforts to become an educated and refined young wife fail miserably. After she embarrasses Jack before an old college chum, Jack admits to his father that he has made a mistake, and Mercy returns to her old mountain home. Under the name of Miss Wheeler, Mercy attends a boarding school, where she becomes the close friend of Jack's sister Edith. Invited by Edith to visit her family, Mercy impresses them all with her newly acquired grace and charm. Unsure of her identity, Jack once again falls in love with Mercy, and when he finally realizes that "Miss Wheeler" is his own wife, his happiness is complete.
