Synopsis
Ben Bolt hopes to marry Alice Lee, the daughter of a prosperous merchant, but through a ruse, a jealous rival makes Ben appear to be a rowdy drunkard, and Alice's father orders him to leave. Ben then sails to Newfoundland, where he discovers a lost ship belonging to Alice's father. Meanwhile, this gentleman, who has lost most of his fortune, angrily rejects the rival's offer of money in exchange for Alice's hand in marriage. All seems happily resolved when Ben returns the lost ship to Alice's grateful father and the two lovers prepare to marry. Ben's rival, however, ties him to the spoke of a mill wheel, and after Rolling Stone, the village clown, releases Ben, the villain steals his schooner. Following an ocean pursuit, the rival and his men are brought to justice, and Alice finally marries her Ben.

Notes
The picture was filmed in New London, CT along the Palisades of the Hudson, and on the Rhode Island coast. It was also reviewed as three reels in length. The film's title and some of the character names were taken from "Ben Bolt," the poem written by Thomas Dunn English in 1842 and popularized by its incorporation into George Du Maurier's novel Trilby, (London, 1894).
