Synopsis

Sister Monica, the Mother Superior in a Provence convent, relates the story of Sister Angela. After a destitute woman leaves her illegitimate baby at the convent gate, the sisters rear the child, and she eventually becomes Sister Angela. One day, a battle is fought near the convent, and the wounded are brought to the sisters for care. Tending to the gallant young Sir Henry, Sister Angela falls in love with him, and soon she renounces her vows to become his wife. As she leaves, the statue of the Virgin Mary assumes the form of Sister Angela and continues her work among the wounded. Angela and Sir Henry live happily for a time, but his drunkenness and adultery finally force her to depart. Returning to the convent door, she is transformed back into Sister Angela, while the statue suddenly reappears in its old niche. In the end, Sister Angela dies and ascends into heaven.
