Synopsis

While traveling in the hills, Sergius, one of Nero's most powerful gladiators, meets and falls in love with an untutored shepherdess named Floria. Impressed with his strength, Floria marries Sergius but finds it difficult to settle into the luxurious surroundings of his palace in Rome. One day, curiosity prompts Floria to follow her husband to the arena, but upon seeing him brutally slay his opponent before Nero and the cheering crowds, she leaves the palace, taking refuge with Paul the Apostle. Sergius soon arrives in a rage, and Paul advises her to return home with him. He is at first angry, but that night when he hears Paul preach, Sergius is so moved by the holy man's gentle words that he decides not to return to the arena. Deprived of his wealth and status, Sergius departs with Floria for a more peaceful life in the hills.
