Synopsis

Despite the pleadings of his sister Ellen, Tom Winston joins the Union forces during the Civil War, while Frank Carey enlists in the Confederate Army against his sister Ethel's wishes. While visiting Ellen, who has become a spy for the South, Tom sees her sending a message to Frank, hidden outside the window. Tom seizes the message from Frank, then allows him to escape, but during the Battle of Shiloh, Union soldiers find the message in Tom's pocket and arrest him as a traitor. Tom is sentenced to death, and even though he performs heroically during the battle, he again is arrested. Frank saves Tom with his own confession of guilt, but later, Frank escapes and returns home, where he is retaken by Union soldiers. Tom, visiting Ellen, is captured by Southern troops, but the two sisters effect an exchange of prisoners, and as Frank and Ellen ride South, Tom and Ethel return to the North.
