Synopsis

Documents the most elaborate and ambitious education project of the Berlin Philharmonic in 2003: Igor Stravinsky's "Le Sacre du Printemps," a dance spectacle bringing together 250 Berlin children and young people from 25 nations and very different social backgrounds, who up until this point have had no contact with either classical music or one another. The rehearsal process provides the teenagers with musically creative and socially integrative experiences that have a lasting effect on them. Characterising his approach with the motto, "You can change your life in a dance class," the British choreographer Royston Maldoom shows the children and young people the creativity, abilities and potentials they have within them - an experience that enables them to face life with greater self-confidence. Parallel to the moving experiences of the children and young people, the first cinema film about the work of the Berlin Philharmonic contains extensive footage of this world-famous orchestra and its new chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle in rehearsal. Throughout the story, the pulse of Stravinsky's powerful music is ever present. The archaic force of "Le Sacre du Printemps" generates the energy that brings together 250 young people and 128 musicians and propels them towards their performance, the climax of a journey that will change their lives.
